The seminar series is aimed at Postgraduates in Statistics and allied fields, as well as at anyone interested in statistics. In this session we will cover basic ideas of random variables, means and variances, standard distributions (Bernoulli, binomial, geometric, Poisson) and their properties, and build up to probability generating functions (pgfs) and moment generating functions (mgs), and their properties.
Future topics: Mixture models, time series, EM algorithm, Bayesian networks, stochastic geometry, statistical modelling, random forests, MCMC, geo-statistics, spatial statistics.
